Welcome to Part 4 of my series where I take a look back at each of the eight Pokémon generations we have experienced so far prior to the start of Generation 9 when Pokémon Scarlet and Violet come out in November. This entry will cover the collection of games headlined by Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.

Generation 4 is one of the strongest generations of the Pokémon video game franchise because of the variety of appeals and experiences on offer. The main series games allow players to travel to 75% of the existing regions at the time (Kanto, Johto, and Sinnoh), with not much time having passed since the Hoenn adventures. The spinoff games ranged from casual Pokémon experiences to heavy battle simulation and a few surprises here and there. It was not uncommon for someone’s Nintendo DS game collection to feature a half dozen or more Pokémon games, a testament to how fun they were. Granted, it wasn’t the same era of Pokémania as Generation 1 or 2, but it was part of a renaissance of sorts that could include Generations 3 before and 5 after it.
